This year promises to be a great one as we venture into new learning experiences! Check out the video below to get a sneak peek at all of the adventures that lie ahead!
Our Chicago Trip Committee has narrowed down our ACT T-Shirt Design Challenge entries to the TOP TEN! There were some FANTASTIC entries -- it is clear that we have some very creative students. Now, it is time to vote to choose the winning design for our ACT T-Shirts. Below, please find the top ten entries. Some entries show concepts for the t-shirt while others depict the exact design that would scanned and printed onto the shirts.
Students will be allowed TWO votes in class. We also wanted to get families involved! Your family (including those with multiple ACT students) is also allowed TWO votes. Make sure you only click on the two t-shirt entries for which you want to vote! Please be sure to have your votes cast by Monday, December 7 at 5 p.m. The winning design will be announced soon after that! Use THIS LINK to vote! Who doesn't LOVE a challenge! The ACT students certainly do. Not only are they working steadily on the Weekly Challenges, but they also are excited to start working towards our Year-Long Challenges. Now that we have a few sessions under our belts, I have begun to talk to the students more about the requirements for completing these challenges. Please read on for more information!
Gettysburg Address One of the ACT challenge traditions is to memorize and recite the Gettysburg Address! Some students even may wish to dress up to "play the part." U.S. Presidents To complete this challenge, students will need to memorize and recite the first and last names of all United States Presidents! Good luck! Perplexus The concept behind Perplexus was created by 3-D design teacher Michael McGinnis in the late 1970′s as a project for an art class. Michael envisioned turning his creation into a toy. He had no idea this vision would turn into a decades long odyssey to get the game to market. The Perplexus Epic was just named game of the year! We have all four versions in our ACT classroom that students may choose to play when we have Brain Game time. Rubik's Cube This challenge is certainly a FAVORITE! Students love trying to figure out the algorithms for completing the Rubik's Cube. We have the traditional 3 x 3 cube and even have a 5 x 5 challenge! Join the cubing club! 30 Book Challenge The 30 Book Challenge (which, for some students, is becoming the 40 or 50 Book Challenge) will challenge students to read chapter books from various genres. Check out the directions here. You can also find the Challenge Log here. Community Task Caring for and serving others is an ACT tradition. Learn more about this service project based challenge here! Mile Run Healthy bodies encourage healthy minds! In the Mile Run Challenge, students will work toward bettering their times for running a mile. Click here to learn more about this challenge. Our ACT family library is a great resource for parents and students. There are a number of helpful books that parents may check out with topics that range from parenting a gifted child to perfectionism. Students may also check out books from the ACT classroom library to read at home (or for one of our challenges...more info to follow!). Consider stopping by to see what is available!
Each year, I try to relate all of the concepts and components of learning to a yearlong classroom theme. This year, our theme is: Be Amazing! This theme is based on a short, inspirational video by Robin Sharma, one of the world's most trusted leadership advisors. Check out the video below -- we will be watching this during our first week of classes! You may also download and print your own copy of the poster to keep in your house. Just click on the image below. Hang it on a bedroom door, bulletin board, or refrigerator. And remember -- Be Amazing!
Happy New Year and welcome back to school! I'm really looking forward to meeting you all very soon at our OPEN HOUSE this August 27 from 6:00 - 7:30 in Room 21 at Pinewood Elementary. This will be our official Open House. Until then, to help you and your family get in the "New Years" mood, check out this fun video from Kid President! |
