Surfing with Sharks
In this awesome unit, you will become an Icthyologist (ik-thee-OL-o-jist). An Icthyologist is a person who studies sharks. Historically, sharks were not considered a commercially important species, so there was not a lot of research, and the very few who researched sharks focused on the relationship between sharks and humans.
Shark research has definitely expanded in recent times but there are still glaring gaps of knowledge.
Shark research is being conducted all over the world to address these gaps, investigating shark species biology, life history, ecology, population, and movements, monitoring fisheries and landings. You will learn more about sharks in this unit, and will even participate in a shark dissection. Be ready to jump right in as we "surf with sharks" in ACT!

Mote Aquarium Shark Zone
Mote has been obsessed with sharks since they opened their doors in 1955 and our founding Director, Dr. Eugenie Clark, earned the nickname "The Shark Lady." Today, Mote boasts the only Center for Shark Research designated by the U.S. Congress, where they're working to understand and help conserve shark species and investigate why sharks, skates and rays rarely get cancer —and whether we can use that knowledge to find new treatments for humans who do.In the Shark Zone, you can explore the history of Mote's shark research—from studying shark repellants and being the first to discover that sharks could learn through training to tracking shark migrations over thousands of miles. Our Shark Habitat also features the world's largest grouper species (the goliath grouper) and other popular Florida game fishes.
