You Are What You Eat -- An Introduction to Food Science

To start our unit, we will talk a lot about WHY food is addictive.  Our sessions will focus on how food companies market food and how our bodies react to the food we eat.  We will also discuss the difference between whole and processed foods.  Use some of the following resources to learn more!

After learning about the differences between whole foods and processed foods, we will begin to talk more about the nutrients that are in our foods.  Specifically, we will focus on the MACRONUTRIENTS: proteins, fats (lipids), and carbohydrates.  These are all of the nutrients that give you energy to move, run, jump, and play!  Check out some of the videos below highlighting the chemistry tests we will be conducting in class!

The video to the left will help to explain some of our in-class chemistry tests.  We will use Benedict's Solution to test for sugars within our foods.  Notice the color changes that occur one the solution is heated.  Benedict's Solution acts as a chemical indicator to reveal the amount of sugar in a food.
